In this article in The Guardian, my friend Chris La Tray discusses the naming (by white invaders) of American mountains with racist slurs, like “Squaw Peak” near his childhood home in Montana.

When I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1995, one of the local mountains was also called Squaw Peak, and that remained its name until 2003, when the state decided to rename it Piestewa Peak, after Lori Ann Piestewa, a Native woman and soldier who was killed in Iraq. It took another five years for the change of name to be approved by the US Board on Geographic Names.
