Chris La Tray: “I Was Raised Beside 'Squaw Peak'”
Eight Crow Nation prisoners under guard at Crow agency, Montana, 1887
When I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1995, one of the local mountains was also called Squaw Peak, and that remained its name until 2003, when the state decided to rename it Piestewa Peak, after Lori Ann Piestewa, a Native woman and soldier who was killed in Iraq. It took another five years for the change of name to be approved by the US Board on Geographic Names.
